HISTORY

"Historically, the Earls of Clarendon would host and entertain notable guests including Queen Victoria, Edward VII and Captain Cook. The Grove was purchased by Lord Donneraile in 1743 and sold after his passing in 1750 to the Hon Thomas Villiers, who then became the first Earl of Clarendon in 1776. The Clarendon family settled at The Grove and lived here for the following 200 years. The 5th Earl of Clarendon became Queen Victoria's 'Aide de Camp' – her Secretary and Aide - and started the English tradition of lavish house parties for the Queen and her posse - it was a new phenomena which The Times named "Weekending". In the 1920's the aristocratic family left The Grove causing The Times to publish a letter mourning the passing of "One of the greatest political houses of the 19th Century".

Today, we are delighted to be welcoming you to The Grove to share our hospitality in the true spirit of The Grove, and where we hope you too will feel like royalty."
